Humans have been fascinated with contacting the dead since the beginning of human existence. Cave paintings by indigenous Australians date back 28,000 years, some depicting skulls, bones, spirits and the afterlife.
Modern Mediumship started to gain popularity during the 19th century, where table rappers, Mediums and ouija boards were used by the upper classes as a source of entertainment.
This trend of seeing these practices as entertainment changed after World War One when many sought to make contact with their lost sons.
However it was just outside of New York at the home of the Fox Family where modern spiritualism found its controversial beginnings.
